Notes:   Deposit 5803 is a floor surface in the courtyard associated with the foundation trench for wall 5783 of the staircase. Unlike later floors, it is interesting to note that 5803 has fewer patches. It would appear that instead of patching small depressions, the courtyard was surfaced with large lenses. The excavation of 5803 is revealing the floor associated with the drain which could be seen in part by the overdigging of 5773 on the south edge of the drain an the cut 5789 for the foundations of the later drain. The varying depths of this floor show how its construction served both as a leveling operation for the courtyard and a new floor surface. As the excavation of 5803 moved to the south along the 1960s pit a different redder floor surface was revealed on top of the floor being revealed earlier in the excavation of 5803. This could mean that we dug through this surface closer to the drain or that this new surface may be a large patch. Further excavation to the south and west has revealed an area of softer fill with large cobbles and a patch of plaster running up to the cut for the foundation trench of wall 5783.
