Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is well sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Part of this foundation trench was excavated by team blue at the beginning of the 2008 season; the uppermost part, including the top of the cut, was discovered in the 1960s. Consequently, all that there is left to dig is the bottommost level of fill within the cut, and all that we will be able to establish from the wall is a rough TPQ from the fill, and a stratigraphic relationship with the robbing trench of the N-S wall.
After we establish the limits of the foundatino trench of this later wall spur, we will proceed to excavate the layer that it cuts-- a band of soil lying between the robbed out N-S wall (N. robbing trench = 5791, S. robbing trench has no # thus far), and the robbed out wall 5473. This strip of soil also overlies the interface between the robbing trench 5791 and the robbing trench of the E-W wall 5725 (continuation of 5551 that lies to the E).
The bottom of the foundation trench was shallow, and it took that path that we expected-- it ran along the N side of the E-W wall spur 5443, and then also rounded its @ edge. This type of arcing cut is common with other walls within the courtyard. We uncovered cobbles of what appears to be an underlying wall section, too. This foundation trench is constructed directly on top of those earlier projecting rubble foundations.
