Description:   The context shape in plan is irregular. The top break of the cut is sharp. The sides of the cut are stepped. The break at the base of the cut is sharp. The base of the cut is flat. Truncation: truncated by boundary wall cut 272.
Notes:   The pit cut 585 is a small irregular pit cut through the dark cobbly fill 585. The pit has stepped walls and is truncated to the north by the cut for the 19th C boundary wall (C 272). The profile of the pit does not suggest and obvious function nor did its fill produce any significant material that would clarify its function. Its proximity to the pier and general shape is suggestive of the holes that dogs did in exterior spaces, and as it is known from the animal bones recovered in Nezi that dogs were present, it is possible the pit was created by a dog digging a hole.
