Description:   The soil color is dark brownish black. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is well sorted. It is clayey sand.
Notes:   After cleaning the pit on 1/4/09 we determined that the 1960s excavations had missed the true cut of the pit, and undercut it when it was excavated. On 2/4/09 we began excavating the remainder of the fill in the N and sides of the pit. In the N, excavation came down on a deposit the pickmen distinguished from the fill as more compact and pottery-rich.
We took the soil in the south as its own context (5937).
After a few centimeters of excavation, the fill came down on a level gray compact floor that appears to extend below 10077, the cobble foundations possibly supporting a pillar or arch. We decided the fill had been fully exavated, and closed the uncontext.
