Description:   The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is moderately sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   Context 5993 is foundation trench for N-S wall 5990 which is eastern boundary of wall north of courtyard of Byzantine house. Appears to be later than surfaces which have been revealed in east half of room, so decided to excavate it at this point. Soil is dark reddish brown clayey silt with 20% inclusions (primarily ceramic sherds with some stone).
Trench 5993 is fairly deep and appears to undercut layers to west in some places. This context is important for dating because its associated wall, 5990, is later than wall 5562 which forms northern boundary of room. A date for context 5993 could help clarify relationship between these two walls when foundation trench for wall 5562 is revealed.
