Stratum:   Ceramic sherds (mainly tile fragments); stones (small to coarse pebbles; sub-rounded to angular; spherical to tabular); 40% inclusions
Description:   The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is moderately sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   Context 6033 is construction floor covering entire western section of room north of courtyard of Byzantine house. Abuts a surface further to east in this room and decided to remove this context at this time. Decision made to take 7 samples for floration for context 6033 and sieve remainder of soil. This is because context 6033 appears to represent some type of floor or construction floor surface. Large amounts (60-70% inclusions of bone, sherds, stones) of debris in this floor surface.
Removal of context 6033 revealed more of western section of wall 6016. Soil is dark yellowish brown clayey silt with 40% inclusions (ceramic sherds; bone; stones). Removal of this context also produced a large amount of bone and some metal. Also some glass and a stone tessera. Interpretation of context 6033 as a construction floor based on belief that around time of house construction, this floor level laid down to serve as foundation for proper floor surface. Hopefully a good date for this context will provide information for the construction history of the house.
Have not yet identified foundation trench for wall 5562, but possible that one did not exist. Instead this could be case where wall built on terrace against a baulk. This also suggested by fact that contemporary levels to north are at least 1.0 m. lower.
In southern part of context 6033 along edge of foundation trench (5960, 5961) for wall 5463, four fragments of a complete base of a burned ceramic vessel found surrounded by a small concentration of burned earth (coordinates: 1035.89N; 267.37S; 84.38H). Preliminary unwashed identification as Constantinopolitan white ware.
Along with more of wall 6016 several other clusters of stones revealed by removal of context 6033 could also represent earlier walls which had been dismantled and covered by this surface. The surface revealed by removal of context 6033 consists of packed earth with few visisble inclusions.
