Description:   The soil color is dark brownish grey. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is moderately sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   We are excavating a baulk left as a martyr along the S side of foundation 5552 by the 1960s excavation. We are attempting to establish the chronology and phasing of the walls in the area. After removing several layers of floors and fills we came upon a layer of ash filled with bone (6136) laid on what appeared to be leveling fill (6140), but not covering the entire floor 6140. to the W floor 6140 was overlaid by a rubbish-filled layer of dump that was only slightly ashy. It is possible that the ash was dumped in the corner of and spread across the floor when the dump was leveled to accommodate floor 6124/6127. removal of fill 6140 revealed a cut separating a nearly perfect square of fill along the E wall of the room from a very nice packed earth floor further W. this cut resembles a similar line several strata above but the spread of ash associated with dumped fill 6136 demonstrates that all apparent cuts above that level were mere phantomes. The excavation session is now ending and we will not be able to finish this context.
