Description:   The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is well sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   After removing context 6343, Panos noticed this area in the southern part of 6343 that had darker and softer soil. 6345 is part of the area which would have directly bordered the bothros (removed in the 1960s). We are removing this context now because it seems to cut the context to its north [as yet unexcavated, number to be decided], and we would like to better understand this relationship.
We believe that this may be backfill from the 1960s excavation from when the bothros was excavated. The reason that this seems plausible is that the edge of the cut seems very clean- it forms a straight line running from east to west, and runs roughly parallel to where the wall 5485 once existed. One could imagine a scenario wherein the area was half-sectioned, the pithos and bothros were excavated, and then the cut surfaces surrounding the bothros and pithos were troweled down to some kind of floor surface. This would make th elayer of soft fill that we excavated as this context 1960s backfill.
Panos, in uncovering the top layer of this context, identified a layer of fill that remained from the bothros cut, clinging to the edge of the cut and revealing the actual cut line as well (all of this was on the east-northeastern edge of the bothros). If this is fill, then it is very late and needs to be excavated next, as it is muc later. Our next aim is to clean the edges of the bothros, revealing its actual section, and then to excavate any remaining fill or backfill from the inside.
