Description:   The soil color is light greyish white. The soil compaction is hard. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy clay.
Notes:   Excavated white clay west of wall 540 thought to be intrusions on ashy pit to south. Excavation of pottery made in field by Director Guy Sanders dated contexts to 12th century upon excavation. Excavation ceased in north with change in soil color and composition, from white clay with occasional small flecks of carbon to a mixture of white clay and grey ashy fill to North. A roughly vertical boundary appeared in the NE scarp, between the white clay mixed with ash and the ashy fill of the pit. (Decided to section the pit to determine chronological relationship between contexts through pottery - see 642). Bottom of context 638 in South was determined by clear change in soil color to a red clay which slopes down from WNW to ESE; this red soil underlies grey ashy fill and white clay.
