| Description: | Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light greenish grey. It is mixed- see description. | |
| Notes: | 6438 was opned at the beginng of the 3rd session.There was no change in soil composition or color from 6430. We changed contexts following our standard 30 cm spot methodology. Wells excavated the majority of this context. The soil was soft, excavated with a triangle & trowel. The soil was not uniform throughout the context. There seemed to be patches or lenses of clayey or marly soil interspersed with ashy material. Some areas of the deposit were softer than others, especially near the sides where roots were present. IN other parts, the soil was more homogenous. Along the sides where there were no roots, the soil had turned a kind of clay crust - 1-2 cm thick, perhaps formed by moisture leaching out of the bedrock. Bones were scattered throughout the context, both horizontally and vertically. There were also some areas with a higher concentration of bones. One area in particular was quite marly, and I could remove the dirt with a paint brush. Pottery was also scattered horizontally and vertically. 6438 was closed after 12 cm of excavation. Short spit.
