Notes:   Context 6826 is a deposit of mixed fill covering the northern part of the room west of the courtyard of the Byzantine house. It was revealed by the removal of contexts 6806 and 6823 and is truncated to the east by robbing trench cut 6762. Context 6826 continues north beneath wall 5725 and west beneath wall 5724. The soil of this fill is of mixed composition and contains dark reddish brown clayey silt, light yellowish white silty clay (remnants of mud-brick), dark yellowish brown clayey silt, and dark greyish brown clayey silt. Inclusions comprise approximately 15% of the soil and consist of charcoal, pottery, tile, metal, bone, and stones (medium pebbles-cobbles; angular-rounded; tabular).
Context 6826 may be dumped fill in this space abutting up against structure 6817. The mixed nature of the soil is similar to many of the fills excavated above this. These fills appear to be Late Roman in date and could represent a time when this space was out of use. We should also note that numerous fragments of wall plaster came out of context 6826, but these should be associated with structure 6817 which has sections of preserved plaster.
An important note concerning context 6826 is that the portion we are excavating is only part of the fill. Today is the final day of excavation during the first session and we would be unable to excavate the entire context before the close of session.
The removal of context 6826 revealed what appears to be a floor surface. If so, this would finally represent a period of use in this space during the Roman period.
