Description:   The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is mixed- see description.
Notes:   An extraordinarily confused context runs NE-SW across our area with a width of 1-2 m and a length of c. 6 m. Parts of it were exposed by 648, 665, 420, 667, 705, 688, 693, 720, and 725. It runs like a parasitic sludge across various other deposits, obscuring their edges and leaving us no choice but to remove it immediately. At several points this deposit looks as thought it is composed of several different contexts, each peeping out at moments convenient to itself, yet leaving no clear borders at any point. Numerous scrapings have failed to solve this problem--particularly in the middle of 741 between ca. N 1012.30 E 269.9 and N 1012.9 E 270.5. The soil is of a darker color throughout, but in this zone it is greyer at points and almost a greyish yellow at others. We have thus decided to excavate it all as one deposit.
Post note: our decision seems justified. The context(s) is/are thoroughly mixed and no boundaries have come up. A special shoutout to chef-de-pick Panos for his careful work on this problem.
Double post note: upon finishing their pass, our astute pickmeisters, Panos and Tasos Kakouros, saw this layer extending lower down. Having solidified the boundaries of this layer, we are following its deeper continuation, using the same context number.
During the course of excavation of this lower section, some medium-sized stones that had come to light in our first pass were removed. They were against the S edge of 714. They do not appear to have formed a deliberate arrangement, and may have settled there during the creation of the layer. In any case, the rest of 741 is also full of stones, and these may simply have been some of those, pushed against the sides of the context boundary as things were settling and whatnot.

North I_/ south
Generally, 741 has taken on the shape of a miniature ha-ha, with the sharp drop to the north. The layer terminates in pit 430 to the west, so we can't get much from that end. Meanwhile, as it runs to the E, it also turns N and passes out of our area at the N scarp, where it cuts wall 631.
Our coin-hound Memos Karvouniaris pulled one coin from the sieve. Another coin was found by Panos or Tasos during excavation itself, and we hope that these coins, once cleaned, will prove useful in dating this context.
At the end of work on the final day of the first session, this context was left unfinished. Minutes before the end of business, Panos and Tasos realized that at the extreme SW end, the context passes under a very thin yellowish layer. It is highly recommended that this be the first task of whatever team assumes the weighty mantle of excavating this region in the second session.
