Description:   Top slope of the context is moderate down to the E. The soil color is dark yellowish black. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   10.5.12 Context 798 is the soft black fill distinguished under the western extent of 797. It is quite different in color and consistency from the red, hard-packed fill that 797 also overlaid close to pier 573.
798 has many pieces of ceramic and continues to be quite soft. When it was determined that 798 lay underneath a reddish, hard-packed fill in the west near an unexcavated part of the area, excavation was paused for the removal of this reddish fill, called 800.
Once 800 was removed, the northern edge of 798 was discovered. The artificial balk/pier remains unexcavated, and Thanasis does not think that 798 underlies this unexcavated portion. Excavation then proceeded on 798 to the south of this artificial balk/pier on the north side of the robbing trench for the e-w wall.
11.5.12 As excavation continued on 798, Guy suggested that this context might be the foundation trench for the E-W wall that was not robbed out at the time of the wall robbing. As 798 was removed, the lower levels of the section of wall left in place, possibly to support an arch over a doorway, were further exposed.
Thanasis began to come down on the bottom of this fill, a hard-packed reddish soil, first discovered in the eastern portion of this context near the preserved wall.
