Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the SE. The soil color is light reddish brown. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   The soil is redder than the soil to the east and softer than the floor in this region(context 79).
This context is being opened to explore a circular cut in the SW quadrant of the Roman Room C. The cut may be associated with the drainage system installed along the west side of NS wall 38. A large amount of carbon inclusions was in the soil, increasing closer to the drain itself. A small (<2cm wide) hole was revealed in the roof of this cut. The reddish soil may be a result of the bedrock on the Se/E end of the context, into which the context is cut. A coin was found in the sieve.
The soil has changed to a softer redder siltier soil. We tested to see how much this change impacted the context's consistency. After about 10cm the soil remains different and bedrock is not appearing. We will close the context and continue to bedrock in a new context. The lower we go the fewer pottery fragments and carbon chunks appear. The cut into the bedrock remains clear all the way around the N and E boundaries. The martyr to the N. remain in tact to preserve the Roman bench, however this cut seemd to extend into it. The context revealed little pottery nad more shells toward the bottom.
