Title:   Lens of marble revetment E of N-S wall
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1109
Context:   25
Date:   2015/05/08
Lot:   Lot 2015-054
Stratum:   Inclusions comprise roughly 60% of soil matrix, most are marble revetment pieces with some ceramic sherds. Medium pebbles, subrounded.
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light brownish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   The lens of marble revetment is being excavated at the same time as context 24 immediately to the north and is part of the removal of the mosaic sublevels. This context will be equal to 24 in the final Harris Matrix. The soil around and in the lens is different from the soil in context 24 in that it has black and dark brown inclusions. This soil difference appears to be confined to this lens and does not extend further into context 24. There are some large chunks of charcoal (~.004x.004m) but are not widespread throughout the context. They are most frequent in the west side. There are many small pieces of pottery near the center of the context. Soil is most compact beneath the tile and around/above the marble revetment frangments on the west side.
Beneath this lens the rubble fill from context 24 appears to continue, since the stones are coarse and unworked and are approximately the same size (boulder sized). Soil at the westernmost edge (40cm in from the block marking the west edge) is very compacted but also has the carbon inclusions present throughout the rest of the lens. It might be the same soil as the rest of the context and just more compacted, but was left unexcavated due to the problematic nature of its identification. (later note: was excavated 08-05-2015).
