Stratum:   20% angular medium pebbles, some tiny charcoal and slate, 90% tile
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the N. The soil color is light brownish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   This is a large layer of continuous tile and its south edge was conspicuously linear (E-W). It also curves around an area of exposed rubble. We suspect that it is a leveling layer, and one of many in the area the relates to the transformation of the space before the mosaic was laid. This layer was laid next to (and is therefore) later than the rubble to their north or part of the surrounding soil. Many of the tiles have grooves and are clearly Roman.
May 8
This context cut clearly from the surroundings on the sides and revealed rubble similar to the on the entire east side of the room. Note: we have sectioned the room at this point and are only digging in the east side. The rubble and tile in this area likely relates to that observed on the west side.
Elevations: west= 81.56m; east= 81.53m
