Stratum: | the soil between the rubble is the same as the soil of 290
Description: | Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt. Structure materials: limestone. Material size: mixed- the stones ranged in size from ca. 10-30cm. Block with stele base: .4 x 1.04 x .53 m; threshold block: .54 x .8 x .13 m. Material finish: mixed- some unworked, a few squared. Material construction: uncoursed. Material bonding: none extant. Features: see notes.
Notes: | originally we thought that the ashlar block and the repurposed threshold block were not part of 288, but ultimately we decided to include them in 288 the rubble foundation ran under the ashlar block, but not under the threshold block the threshold block sat on the outer wall-- it was probably part of the foundation along with the rubble course the threshold block has a cutting for a door jamb (byzantine?) in its NW corner the ashlar block has what appears to be the foot of a stele in its southern face stele dimensions: .1 x .54 x .1 m Removing this structure was our first action after initial cleaning of the entire trench. We removed it first because it was the latest thing in the trench, which we know because it was a different construction on top of the original walls, using spolia possibly dating to the original construction of the stoa. Upon removing the ashlar block, we saw that the rubble wall and threshold block (with no rubble under it) functioned together as a foundation for the ashlar block, which formed the superstructure of the wall.
