Context Type:   Deposit
Title:   Cement subsurface around well
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1110
Context:   350
Date:   2016/04/12
Stratum:   But mainly a cement filled with many small pebbles
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We open this context to remove the cement layer that extends over the central and southern portion of the new, North extension of our area, including over the well. The matrix is mixed chunks of cement (concrete?) and some yellowish-brown sandy silt fill Within the fill there are also marble chunks, presumably originally deriving from the marble flooring and decoration of this area. After removing the cement layer, we seem to have a layer of brown fill underneath in the eastern half of the surface thereby revealed, and another pebbly cement surface with some fill on top to the west of the well.
After some light demolition and (mostly) defining of the Broneer retaining wall adjacent to/on top of the well (see Structure 356), during which fill was removed from on top of the Broneer construction (which is in fact one block, rather than two independent walls with ancient layers in between as we had earlier believed), it thereby became clear that 350 is a modern layer since it seems to be inextricably linked to the installation of Broneer's construction around the well, which is still rather confusing.
Initially dated to Middle Roman on the basis of the marble revetment fragments found in this context, which it was assumed postdate the "Augustan" remodeling of the Stoa. Stratigraphically modern owing to relationship with STR 356.
