We open this context to take down the fill east of the well that overlays the surface exposed during the excavation of the foundation trench for the Late Wall (Context 369). Initially it seemed that that the fill in the southern half of the area was distinct from the northern half, and so we were going to take them in separate contexts; as we excavate, however, it becomes apparent that it is the same fill. The soil is light yellow/orange brown silty sand and relatively compact, except for the southern portion closest to the Robbing Trench, which is looser. There are inclusiosn of bone, metal, and marble chunks; eventually this fill comes to be characterized by an abundance of charcoal and small sherds. There are also some sporadic patches of clay. Eventually we expose a floor surface that extends through the whole context, except at the southwest and northern edges. The absence of the surface in the SW is likely due to the presence of several very large roots in this area. In addition, there are two circular depressions (see Contexts 405, 406) in the central portion of the context, on an axis roughly parallel to the front of the Stoa; they are 0.15-17 m in diameter and 0.18 apart. Thanasis suggests they are for wood (i.e., postholes?). We close and decide to continue to excavate this fill around to the area west of the well under a different context (387).
