We open this context to excavate the clayey patch of fill southwest of the well and south of the surface revealed below context 395. At the southern edge of the context, the fill is dryer and more of a silty sand, but the area closer to the well is a moister, clayey sand. At the opening of the context it is unclear what the relationship between this fill and the surface immediately to its north is -- that is, whether the floor would be found at a slightly lower level, or whether it had cut and removed. As we excavate, however, it becomes clear that the floor does simply end and was cut prior to the formation of the present context--possibly related to Broneer's construction (structure 356)? See Cut 401. This fill is removed down to the redeposited bedrock level. This bedrock level contained a small pit with the same fill; the bottom of the pit provided the bottom elevation for the context (81.23), but a more representative closing elevation was taken nearby at 81.32 m.
