Title:   Grayish layer abutting Broneer Wall (4RW)
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1110
Context:   443
Date:   2016/04/19
Lot:   Lot 2016-012
Stratum:   light yellowish brown silty sand; few tile fragments
Description:   The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is moderately sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   We open this context to excavate the grayish fill in the N end of 4RW directly behind to the S (and somewhat overlaying?) the Broneer retaining wall (structure 327). This patch of fill seems distinct from the fill in context 433, and its proximity to the Broneer Wall leads to the question of if and how it may be related to that operation. The fill is yellowish brown silty sand with some orange. As we excavate, it appears this layer only abuts the Broneer Wall (i.e. does not extend over). After a pass, however, we reach the edge of the Broneer Wall to the N and the top edge of a face of cut bedrock/stereo(?) at the S. Beginning here, the fill becomes different and seems to continue to go very deep. We thus decide to assign this new fill a new context number (444) and sieve separately.
