Stratum:   many medium to smallish rocks
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the W. The soil color is light reddish mixed. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silt.
Notes:   the west foundation trench appears to widen, just as the east foundation trench in 2R does. We decided to excavate this context after 503 because it lay under 503 and the foundation trench most likely cut into 478/497.
the soil of this fill was browner, some yellow; the hue was reddish and greyish-- in terms of color it was quite mixed. We attribute to this a mixed dump fill.
Panos eventually found a strip of softer, less rocky soil that ran under 497, which confirmed that the foundation trench cut 478/497, not vice versa.
We couldn't reach the bottom of this context with the prism; we had to measure it with a tape measure, so we do not have coordinates for it. The bottom was fairly level throughout.
Deeper down 505 became much rockier, and these rocks were significantly larger than those above.
This cut was much wider than the northern part of the west foundation trench, apparently to accommodate the wide blocks in the wall in the lower courses (cf the south foundation trench of 2R). The builders seem to have been worried about the stability of this corner and used exceptionally large blocks for the foundation.
