Lot:   NB1110 B542
Stratum:   sherds (incl. some trampled into the surface), subrounded to angular spherical to tabular fine to coarse (very few coarse) pebbles
Description:   Top slope of the context is gradual down to the SE. The soil color is light reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is moderately sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   this small patch of soil in the NW of the trench seems to be the 8th lens of the series of surfaces. Like the others it is clayey, compacted, and has sherds and bone trampled in. it is laid directly on the 9th lens. It is so small that perhaps it is a resurfacing of merely this area of the 9th lens, not of the entire surface.
Removal of 543 showed that 542 is not, in fact, laid directly on the 9th lens, but on a layer of fill. We had thought that this fill jwas part of the surface, but it has few sherds trampled in--in fact it has some sherds near the top not laid flat-- and is not reddish, unlike the surface revealed below 543. perhaps 542 was a larger surface that was destroyed by the significant remodeling represented by 538.
The sherds of EH red-slipped cycladic stamped found pressed into this surface are part of the same vessel as those found in contexts 538 and 543. This may indicate that this context was not a surface at all, but rather another part of the leveling fill for surface 538. Alternatively, these sherds could have been pressed into this surface during the dumping of that leveling fill.
28/5/2016 we no longer believe that this was a surface, but rather another layer of fill for the original construction of the EH metaled road (538).
