Corinth Basket: South Stoa, context 589
Collection:   Corinth
Type:   Basket
Name:   South Stoa, context 589
Area:   South Stoa
Title:   Reopening rocky layer E 2R
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1110
Context:   589
Date:   2016/06/08
Lot:   Lot 2016-055
Stratum:   60% spherical rounded, subrouded and tabular subrounded coarse pebbles and cobbles. Relatively abundant pottery. Some few bones.
Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   08.15: Work starts on the deposit. Remains of the unfinished pass of the previous context are still visible so work will start on the NE area and they will be resumed E to W as previously. Handpicks used.
11.10: Work continues uninterrupted on the area. After a second pass most of the E face of the cut 577 is gone.
11.17: Works closer to the bedrock have revealed a wetter area of the deposit with some roots that may come from the bushes on top of the bedrock. The whole area captures humidity which affects not only the soil but the preservation of artefacts as well. Also important to notice the relative abundance of obsidian flakes, many of them the result of applying the levallois technique.
12.37: Change at the soil detected in the East side of the deposit, a more compact and yellow soil althiugh apparently also containing cobbles. The deposit still needs to be finished but the boundary with the following one is well defined already.
13.45: Work ended for the day. Seems the new context also emerges by the W of the deposit.
9th of June, 2016
07.40: Work resumed in the context. Excavation is taking place from the edge of the foundation trench of wall 459 towards the line.
09.16: The area presents three possible contexts that need further definition and limits. First, there is a patch of ashy soil sectioned by the foundation trench. Although it could be interpreted as a hearth, the absence of charcoal on it and its relationship with other contexts point more to a secondary deposition. Secondly, a firm deposit of yellow soil and stones E of the area that slopes down to the W, and an orange firm deposit W of the bedrock and that right now seems to be running below the yellow one. Despite the area could be interpreted as a shallow cut, it is not the case: 589 (and its artificial separation 582) fills but also cover with a high differential elevation the supposed cut. Also, the poorly sorted soil, the way the rocks and the sherds are deposited and imbricated, and the extremely diffused boundaries, all indicate a rappid succession of throws of soils. The rapid succession of events did not allow for the formation of boundaries, with the large cobbles loosely inserted between them.
10.45: After defining the diffuse boundaries of the different deposits the context was closed. 6 full buckets plus 7 liters removed; 103 liters total.
