Lot:   Lot 2015-056
Stratum:   20% cobbles, broken tiles, small-large chunks of limestone, and a bit of carbon
Description:   Top slope of the context is even. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   Characteristics: similar soil to 54, more bedrock than 43 and 54
We are opening this context to see if there is any change between the upper and lower fills of the robbing trench. No soil change occurred in closing 54, however the presence of bedrock suggests a possible change in this context. We are hoping to find a clear stratigraphic difference by segmenting this robbing trench into upper and lower layers. We are leaving a martyr at the E end because of the Late Roman wall that was once there, and a martyr on the W end because the cut of NS RT there is not possible to distinguish at this point. On the north side, there is a strip of soft dark soil against the bedrock cut. It is possible that this is part of the original foundation trench for the EW wall. We have therefore left a martyr against it and will remove it later, if it turns out to be a real stratum. We reached the top of a course of ashlar blocks like that at the bottom of 37. These extend below the martyr on the west side.
May 20: In the SE corner, there is a fill of white cementy/limestone chunks and soft soil like what was found throughout context 37 in patches. It is possible that this means the soil in 37 was redposited from the original construction of the foundation.
