Context Type:   Deposit
Title:   Rubble fill north of structure 110 center
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   111
Date:   2014/04/21
Stratum:   60% ceramics (mostly tile), and cobbes, 2% snails, roots.
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the S. The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is moderately sorted. It is silty clay.
Notes:   We open this context to investigate the rubble fill north of structure 110, running up to the north scarp. We hope to reveal the north face of the EW wall 110. We expect to find an underneath layer similar to the pale clay melt to the east found in 103. The soil of this context is dark grayish brown with siginificant inclusions of stones and tile, as well as a large quantity of snails shells. We start excavation in the east moving west because the two patches of rubble are truncated in the middle by a root and also some of cut 85. Despite this truncation, the two appear to be the same fill. After removal of the first layer, we decide to keep the two patches separate. Given the inclusion of pottery within the fill, the rubble pile is likely not the collapse of the wall itself, but a deposit of mixed fill mostly takes from the collapsed wall. On the southern side of the deposit we come down on the northern edge of the EW wall - this is the southern limit of this context. On the northern side, we excavate to the scarp. The W boundary is that set when we opened the context at the truncation of the root. We stop excavating downwards when we hit a layer of compact, clayey silt that is relatively free of inclusions. This layer is apparently the same as that which borders the W deposit of rubble on its western side. Excavation of that patc will be next - ideally it will reveal the same clay surface underneath. Excavation was stopped on the east side when we camme down on a layer of clay underneath a row of tumble. This clay is associated with the collapse of the structure. See deposits 116 and 118 for the remainder of the excavated rubble.
