Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   112
Date:   2014/04/16
Lot:   Lot 2014-001
Stratum:   Inclusions: 10% total: cement (c. 15cm); tile; ceramic; bone; stone (pebble to cobble); frags. of decorative floor; metal; glass; plaster.
Description:   The soil color is dark brownish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   16-4-14: Thanasis began excavating the oblong cut revealed by the removal of context 105. He quickly removed a deep layer of fill in 3 passes, which was soft and dark, with large inclusions of plaster/cement flooring material, perhaps material from the bedding for a floor that we found at higher elevation. A number of fragments of worked stone possible associated with the hypothesized 'cosmati' floor of the church were found in this fill. A large coin was found in the sieve by Panos (2014-37). Tile was found frequently throughout the fill as well. At the N end of the pit, Thanasis came down on the top of the skull c. 35 cm below the top of the cut. Work ended here for the day…
17-4-14: Thanasis has removed most of the remaining fill above the skeleton and has begun to articulate it, beginning with the arms and head. A lead object (weight) was found E of the skull (123.53/1072.27/84.89) and an iron nail was found nearby (at roughly the same elevation, very slightly to the S). Over the course of the day Thanasis continued to reveal and articulate the skeleton, which seems quite well preserved, and nearing the end of the work day he revealed the feet, thus leaving the entire skeleton exposed. Another (small) coin was found in the sieve from the grave fill towards the end of the day (2014-45). Work ended here for the day, and we will continue with work on the skeleton on Tuesday after the Easter holiday.
22-4-14: Measured and drew skeleton 127.
23-4-14: Removed most of skeleton 127.
24-4-14: Conservator removed skull, vertebrae, and pevlis. Sample collected.
25-4-14: Context closed after measured. Soil change to grayish-brown composition is visible at bottom of the pit where Tasos scraped for the soil sample. It seems reasonable to concluse that the fill of this grave was deposited in one event, given its uniformity and the clear definition of cut 126.
Later notes, 7/27/2014, LFK - bone from the sieve for this context includes human bone and animal and are kept in Bone Lot 2014-21, though some of this material may belong with the primary interment.
