Title:   Rubble foundations for modern NS Wall N of Unit 2
Category:   Structure
Notebook:   1108
Context:   11
Date:   2014/04/08
Stratum:   10% inclusions of sub-angular stones, rounded stone, ceramic.
Description:   The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty clay. Structure materials: Limestone and Conglomerate. Material size: Conglomerate: 0.16x0.17; Limestone: 0.04-0.20. Material finish: Unworked. Material construction: Rubble. Material bonding: None.
Notes:   N-S wall was positioned above another wall that was found lower in the scarp on the first day. It was excavated to determine its date and whether it is associated with the lower wall. Upon excavating the southern extern of the wall, we find larger, non-conglomerate stones possible associated with the lower wall, we stop excavating in order to further investigate the relationship of the two walls.
Later notes: The wall is made up of limestone and conglomerate cobbles and boulders, and was a single course in most areas, although the northern extent of the excavated area revealed underlying stones. These stones are possibly associated with a pre-existing wall below revealed in the cleaning of the northern scarp. The two walls appear to run along the same N-S orientation. Upon finding the second course of stone, we halt further excavation in order to avoid disturbing a lower context. The northern half of the uppose most wall was left unexcavated. On the next day we completed excavation of the N-S wall. Excavation had been stopped the day before in order to avoid overdigging and accidentally coming down on an earlier wall. This was later determined to be over cautious. Directions were given to remove only the first layer of stone on the surviviing Northern third of the wall. A second layer of stones was found under the entire length of the N-S wal that was excavated today. Excavations were halted after the first layer of stones was removed and the trench fully swept. The line of the western side of the trench did not follow the orientation of the underlying wall. The second layer of stones (the one underlying the excavated material) would need to be excavaated to determine the relation of this wall to the underlying wall, but the two walls do not seem to be on the same orientation based on the lines of the western side of the excavated N-S wall. This line, and the edge of the exczvated pit was determined based on the change in the soil - inside of the pit was a grayish brown clayey dirt but the edge of the cutting was much siltier.
Later notes(14.4.14): it was determined that one final course of stones remained from last week's excvation. This course was removed south to north, revealing a layer of hard, silty dirt underneath. As we work northwards, someof the boulders on the west side are being removed from beneath the floor (approximately overlapped by 0.04m). Under the silty layer in which the stones are embedded is a layer of clay that is the bottom of the foundation trench. Approximately 1.0m from the northern scarp the stones in the west side project too far under the floor and are left in place. We continue excavating the stones in the center and on the east side. The lower boundary is still defined by clay with a layer of silt on top, but now some ceramic inclusions are being exposed in the clay layer. The deposit and clay bottom extends all the way to the north scarp. Excavation was halted when we reach the north scarp. In each case, the bottom of the structure was difficult to determine. We think that this wall was dug coincidentally on top of another earlier wall and utilized the stones below as foundation. Structure 91 is what remains of this.
