Notes:   Structure 164 is a previously excavated drain--see NB 880, 26-27, 28-29, 50, 61-62, 65, 66-67, 68, 69. The structure was revealed in NB 880 B. 15 pp. 26-27. That basket was dated to the 1260s, presumably by pottery (1 basket, thrown), since no coins were found. Many of the baskets from the fill of the drain were undatable, but all that are datable fall within the 13th c. The laying of the pipe seems to truncate the fill and cut to its south (144, 145). We are leaving the drain unexcavated. It is made of limestone, conglomerate, and a few marble pieces. Most of the blocks are roughly hewn; a few are unworked. There are tiles under some stones, presumable for leveling. The bottom is paved with tiles. The drain enters our courtyard from the south and turns east, then runs out c. 1.50m north of the sourth wall of the courtyard. The run off from this drain is probably responsible for the depression to its east, an area explored by previous excavations and backfilled--cleaned out by us in deposit 114. The southern extent of the drain was consolidated in the reconstruction south of our area.
Later notes [29-4-14] JLL: Explanation of dimensions: We took the length of the drain along its interior curve. Then we measured along its N-S axis to represent its length and the E-W axis to represent its width. The drain enters the courtyard from the south, extends north and then curves eastward.
