Description: | Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes: | Context 168 is the removal of the surface in the S portion of Room 8, Unit II, revealed in Context 140 above. The surface was fugitive across much of the central portion of the room, but was well-finished at the SW corner and along the proposed bench foundation at the E. Elsewhere, the surface was marked by a firmer texture and a generally consistent greyish color. The appearance of a concentration of carbonized material in the SE portion of the room (general area indicated on top plan) caused to take a sample of about 10% of the remaining soil of the context. An ashy layer (excavated in Context 174) suggested that the carbonized material may have been more generally mixed into this soil. After the removal of about 5cm, a harder soil with a higher density of inclusions was revealed, and we closed the context. Under this surface and along the W face of Wall Context 155, a possible foundation trench was revealed and excavated in Context 177. A possible northern continuation was excavated in Context 176. Following the removal of this surface, we concluded that the more inclusion-rich soil was a part of a general fill that may have been a lens overlying a differentiated fill to the N exposed in Context 153. We therefore opened Context 184 to remove this lens.
