Description:   Top slope of the context is steep down to the SE. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   We open this basket to explore the rubble layer revealed in context 148 and the removal of the red sterile fill. The current fill is reddish brown and soft. The soil is within the matrix of the tumble. We noticed that the clay layer above what should be the continuation of the south side of structure 135 runs under and possibly within the tumble to the east of it. We take this to be an earlier fill that made its way into the matrix of the stones before the current brown fill on top of it and so we take this layer first. The deposit consists mostly of large cobbles, tiles, snail. In addition to the limestone, which constitutes the majority of stones, there are also a small number of marble and conglomerate fragments. We are excavating slowly, from west to east. The revealed surface on the west side is clay and impressed with roof tiles. Like the clay layer to the west (it is possible, but not definite, that these are the same context). We are being careful on the north side to avoid distrubing the scarp and contaminating the current context. We are also looking through NB 850 for information on the red layer and tumble in the adjoining spaces that were excavated in the early 1990s. Even though we are sieving 100%, after checking around the halfway point, the sieve had yielded less than a third of a bucket of ceramics, and very little bone. At about a meter from the east end of the rubble drops off by about 0.38m. The lower, more eastern surface that is just exposed does not have roof tiles pressed into itself, unlike the surface above. Excavation was stopped when all of the rubble was cleared and we came down on another surface, even lower than the one already discussed (identified by the absence of inclusions).
