Title:   Fill of N trench along Wall Context 155, Room 8
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   176
Date:   2014/04/25
Stratum:   Inclusions: Very few.
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is very soft. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Context 176 is the fill of a probable foundation trench along the W face of Wall Context 155, the E wall of Room 8, Unit II. The cut is Context 182. A continuation to the S along the unrobbed S portion of the wall was Context 177. They are kept separate because no connection between them could be found. It is truncated by a robbing trench in this area.
This portion of the trench is only preserved for a short space beside a segment of the wall which is extant. About 30cm down, we realized that the cut of the trench was truncated at the S of this context by a red, stony deposit, excavated in Context 183. This context was therefore dug out of sequence. The red, stony deposit (Context 183) may also have truncated a softer fill previously identified as a possible foundation trench (see notes for Context 153), which itself may truncate Context 176 at the N.
We therefore closed this unit to take out at least the red, stony deposit that clearly truncates it. This fill is likely contaminated by the adjacent Context 183, as well as the softer fill around it, particularly where the cut is not preserved at the S. We do, however, believe that Context 176 was part of the same event as Context 177, and both are likely to be the fill of the same foundation trench for Wall Context 155.
The soft fill of this trench continues deeper and the bottom was not reached in the first session of this season, April 2014. However, the same kind of firmer, more inclusion-rich soil as was revealed in Context 177 was not reached here, perhaps suggesting that the foundation also continues deeper to the S.
This fill is dated by pottery to the second half of the 13th c. The probably equivalent fill of Context 177 is dated somewhat later, to the Late 13th-early 14th c.
