Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the N. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Context 177 is the fill of a trench along the W face of Wall Context 155, the W wall of Room 8, Unit II. The cut of this trench is Context 182. A probable continuation of the trench was also found to the N, W of an unrobbed out portion of this wall, filled by Context 176. The cut in this area, however, is truncated, and therefore the fill is likely contaminated.
In this S portion of the trench the cut was fairly clear and the soil was uniformly softer than the adjacent levels. Just to the N of the unrobbed out S portion of Wall Context 155, the cut was truncated by the robbing trench. Because of the regularity and proximity of the cut to the wall, we believe this is a likely foundation trench. However, around 30cm down, a firmer level with many ceramic inclusions was revealed. Because the soil seemed to have changed and because it was becoming difficult to excavate this narrow space, we decided to focus our efforts on the possible continuation to the N of this trench (Context 176). The bottom of the wall was not reached.
We were unable to return to this area this session (April 2014). The question of the nature of this fill therefore remains open, though we continue to suspect that it is a foundation trench. The proposal of Panagiotis Stamatis that the change in the firmness of the fill may be due to an earlier phase of the wall's construction is attractive, but does not explain why a second, higher foundation trench would be necessary. See the notes for Wall Context 155 for earlier theories concerning the phasing of this wall.
The fill of this context dates to the late 13th to early 14th c., but the probably equivalent fill of Context 176 is dated to the second half of the 13th c. Both dates are based on pottery.
