Area:   Temple E, Southeast
Title:   Cut for grave 2014-04 in church
Notebook:   1108
Context:   188
Date:   2014/04/28
Description:   The context shape in plan is sub-rectangular. The top break of the cut is sharp. The sides of the cut are vertical. The break at the base of the cut is sharp. The base of the cut is tapered blunt base. Truncation: Truncated at S end, by adjacent Grave 1990 41A-C. Truncates grave to north..
Notes:   Later Notes: 29-4-14: We remain uncertain about the E boundary of this cut, and were unable to complete our exploration due to heavy rain just before our final day of excavation, which rendered the area far too muddy to proceed. The boundaries of the cut filled by Context 99 have been elusive throughout (see Context 99 notes for extensive discussion), particularly to the E. While a distinctive change in the matrix was observed during the digging of 99, the position of Skeleton 121 demonstrated that the cut was not defined by the end of the soft matrix first removed in the excavation of Context 99, but extended into the harder, clayish matrix surrounding. A hard clay matrix continues E of the skeleton, out of which a disarticulated (?) skull is tumbling. This seemed to suggest a continuation to the E of the secondary deposit laid over the legs of Skeleton 121. Furthermore, removal of Context 83 revealed a cement surface that is cut, which potentially could mark the boundary of the cut associated with fill 99. We intended to explore this by opening a new context to the E of 99 to remove that fill, and determine if they were equal, and if the cement cut was the E boundary of cut 188. Alternatively, it could be associated with an independent event, filled by a distinct deposit E of 99, with the true E boundary of Cut 188 in the area where it currently stands [NE: 123.63/1072.21/85.25; SE: 124.08/1070.87/85.26], and merely not easily distinguishable from the adjacent context, perhaps even truncated. We recommend that the next excavator proceedas we planned to resolve this issue. The bottom may also be undefined, as the top of a child's skull is now visible, as ewll as material that lay under the head of Skeleton 121. Rain prohibited exploration of this deposit, and the bottom of 188 thus remains to be determined. Currently the bottom elevation stands at 84.85.
Late notes - 15/5/14 - LFK :
Excavation on this cut resumed during the second session of the 2014 field season. The cut was extended to the east with contexts 204 and 242. The east boundary appears to extend downward vertically from the break in the plaster/kosmati surface noted by the previous excavators. When digging, it appeared to me that the grave matrix changed directly overlying the secondary bone pile to a harder, more clayey fill with less tile and ceramic inclusions, so there ended up being two contexts on the east side of this cut which together equate grave fill 99 on the west side of the cut. The only coins were retrieved from the upper layer of grave fill (204).
The bottom of the cut was also extended a bit in the north and south end, exposing a hard-packed red clay fill below filled with crumbly human bone of a different state of preservation. On the east side, the bottom of the grave cut follows the top of a broken line of limestone blocks which, in conjunction with the hard red bone-chipey surface to the west, could represent an earlier cist grave disturbed by the creation of the 188 grave cut. 2 disarticulated skulls, skeletons 282 and 283, could therefore represent individuals belonging to this lower grave which were redeposited in grave 2014-04 prior to the inclusion of the primary inhumation and secondary bone piles as they show signs of damage being enacted to them in antiquity.
188 most likely truncates another as-yet unexcavated grave to the north, as fully articulated feet were discovered at the very north end under where the head of skeleton 121 would have lain.
188 also cuts a lower plaster surface at elevation 85.12.
