Stratum:   Inclusions of stones (sub-rounded cobbles), tiles, pottery and bone (approximately 35%)
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   We began work on the North Baulk in an area N of room G. There was a polygonal area roughly 1.7 m. by 1.35 m. defined by a collection of cobble stones. These stones are rounded and spherical. These stones lie directly E of a visible cut in the earth running N-S at approximately E 104.70. We are interested in understanding this cut as the edge of a robbing trench, the scarp from previous excavations, or something else.
We began by removing the cobble stones and clearing the soft, loose, dark earth around and beneath them. Some pottery and bone framgents were found along with one glass fragment and an iron nail.
The N-S cut is visible continuing approximately 0.60 m. down in the exposed scarp N of unit 2. It now seems that this cut is the scarp from an earlier trench. The area E of this where we are digging seems to be a natural fill. The area W of this seems to be backfill from the earlier trench due to the pockets of dry, light earth visible and due to the steep slope down to the W.
