Name:   Temple E, Southeast, context 222
Area:   Temple E, Southeast
Title:   Levelling fill in Unit 2, Room 7
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   222
Date:   2014/05/07
Stratum:   80-90% inclusions, including chunks of building stone, broken pavement, roof tiles and bone.
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the NW. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   During the excavation of the inclusion-rich deposit context 210, it was noted that a similar-looking, inclusion-rich fill was visible in the N. quarter of room 7, adjacent to 210, at a lower elevation. We were unsure if 210 and the lower-elevation deposit represented the slumping of a continuous fill, the continuation of a fill layer over the top of a pit, or a separate event, and so we decided to open a new context (222) and excavate the north quarter separately. A patch of clay lying flat along wall context 59 that looked like it could have been part of a clay surface no longer otherwise extant was left in situ. Deposit 222 was traced from the N martyr south in an attempt to determine where it stopped. Inclusions include a large volume of building material, as noted in the soil information box. As we continued to the south, it became clear that 222 is adjacent to at least 1, possibly 2 packed surfaces.
