Type:   Basket
Name:   Temple E, Southeast, context 292
Area:   Temple E, Southeast
Title:   Clayey deposit above tiles
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   292
Date:   2014/05/14
Stratum:   Inclusions of tiles, sub-rounded coarse pebbles, pottery, and one small piece of marble (approximately 5%)
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   Context 292 is a square shaped clayey deposit is a square-shaped clayey deposit visible sitting S of the exposed wall and covering part of the destruction debris layer. We begin to remove this deposit of clayey earth with small picks moving first to the W. We expose stones, some large cobble sized, and tiles which seems to be a continuation of the fallen destruction layer. We then continue to remove the clayey deposit on top of the destruction further to the E, delineating the S side of the platform and part of the W side of the wall that abuts it. We continue removing this layer to the S, towards the stairs, and expose a floor surface at N1076.74 E111.252 H85.84. At this point we also expose the point at which the floor had been cut through for the digging of a pit. This pit was excavated in the 1990s, but was clearly underdug as part of the fill still remains. The tile fall / destruction layer, however, clearly rests on top of this cut. Therefore, when this building was still standing a pit was cut through the floor. It is still unclear, however, what state the N-S wall was in when this collapse occurred.
Some pottery, bone, glass and iron was collected in this context. One coin (2014-121) and a bronze eyelet were found in the dry sieve.
This context is one of a series of clayey soil deposits found above and on either side of the preserved top of this wall (wall 110). It is possible that we are excavating the nerk, or melted clay coatings of this wall. We are considering this explanation for the clayey deposits of contexts 277 and 286 as well.
