Stratum:   Inclusions of lots of stones (coarse pebbles, cobbles, boulders; sub-rounded and angular tabular), pottery and shell (approximately 30%)
Description:   Top slope of the context is moderate down to the E. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We turn our attention to the N-S wall running N of the stairs and consider its collapse and its relation to the interior space to the W of it. The terminus ante quem for the collapse of this wall is the early 16th century, as that is the date of the large stony red layer that was excavated on top of this fill. This wall wasl also leveled at some point and not robbed out, as the preserved top of the wall continues at the same elevation across its length. We begin to remove the rocky deposit sitting on top of the preserved top of the wall to see if the sloping clayey/tile deposit sloping to the E runs right up against the preserved top of the wall or over it. We begin to remove this rocky deposit with small picks moving N along the top of the wall. It soon becomes clear that a clayey deposit lies under the rocky fill and is in fact running over the top of the wall. We close the context when all of the chunky brown deposit is removed and the clayey deposit covering the preserved top of the wall is exposed. We leave a martyr at the N edge of the context (N1079.19) to prevent contamination from the tree roots and wheelbarrow ramp in this area.
Little pottery, bone, glass and iron was collected from this context. A small bronze fragment was found in the dry sieve.
