Context:   316

Stratum:   Inclusions of stones (sub-rounded coarse and angular coarse pebbles), some pottery, and bone (approximately 5%)
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the SW. The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   After having defined the cut of the underdug pit from the 1994 excavation of this area we began to remove the fill of the pit. This was done very quickly, as the clayey bottom of the pit was reached only 0.10 m. below the top of the cut. Very little pottery and bone was collected in this context.
According to the trench notebook (#869) of the 1994 excavations, a large bothros was dug in this area that dated to the early modern period. It is possible that the full extent of this shallow pit was missed in the previous excavation of the larger, later bothros.
The pottery dating of this pit places it in the Franksih period, the early 14th century. It seems, then, that the excavation of Basket 40 in NB 869 missed this shallow pit when digging the larger early modern pit. Notes added 28/05/2014, K.E.L.
