Corinth Basket: Temple E, Southeast, context 324
Collection:   Corinth
Type:   Basket
Name:   Temple E, Southeast, context 324
Area:   Temple E, Southeast
Title:   Bedding fill under bench
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   324
Date:   2014/05/16
Stratum:   Common human bone and tile fragments, a few rounded cobbles and two squared limestone blocks.
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   After removal of structure 302, the fill directly underlying this bench was differentiated from that inside the grave to the east as it contained a large amount of tile and stones, bounded to the north and south by one large limestone block on each side, as large as the largest stones in the overlying course. This fill is laid up against the east side of wall 21 separating nave from narthex and is either cut by the grave cut 317 or the grave cut coinsides with the edge of this context with the grave fill laid against it.
Along with the tile and stones used to level structure 302, a small amount of human bone, some ceramic, and some iron and glass were recovered. Panagiotis and Angela helped at the sieve today. 1 coin (2014-139) was found while sieving. Also, 3 joining fragments of a large white marble vessel were incorpoarted into this bedding much like the tile fragments. It is possible these will match the fragments of a marble vessel found when this area was last excavated in the 1990's, covering the head and shoulders of a burial in room 7.
Note added by K. Petrole, 2017/04/27: marble vessel rim inventoried as MF-1996-49F (four joining frgts.) from this context, but this number now lapsed due to additional frgt. found in 2016 (context 935) which provides join between MF-1996-49E and MF-1996-49F (number lapsed) .
