Corinth Basket: Temple E, Southeast, context 437
Collection:   Corinth
Type:   Basket
Name:   Temple E, Southeast, context 437
Area:   Temple E, Southeast
Title:   Surface south of wall 436
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   437
Date:   2014/06/05
Lot:   Lot 2014-044
Stratum:   15% stones, ceramic sherds, bone, shell obsidian, metal, tesserae, mixed size (fine-coarse), mixed shapes (all shapes)
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light brownish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   We decided to remove this surface deposit S of wall 436 in an effort to clarify the chronological relationships between wall 436, this context, the pit of context 412, and the hard-packed walking surface of context 429. Upon removal of this surface deposit we were able to determine that this deposit abuts wall 436. We expected to remove a thin layer which overlayed the spur wall N of it and that was indeed the case. The removal of this surface also exposed what appears to be a grave, with its easternmost end truncated by the N-S trench (cut 403) that is E of this grave. We will need to excavate this grave before removing any more layers beneath context 437. We suspect that we are now dealing with a number of floors and sub-floors that will be layer-cake in feautre: i.e. one layer of inclusion rich fill and one layer of relatively inclusions-free fill, based on the cut that create pit NB 850 B22, dug in the 1990s.
Bottom elevation range, going by the same top elevation points illustrated on the top plan: 1 = 84.90, 2 = 84.89, 3 = 84.88, 4 = 84.89

Through comparison of soil color and inclusions, as well as top and bottom elevations, we have determined that contexts 437 and 429 form one continuous level surface within the space N of the church. See Excavation Notes for Context 429.
