Title:   Clay surface layer beneath road E. of EM Wall
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   48
Date:   2014/04/10
Stratum:   Field stones, tiles, pot sherds. 10-20%. Also some pieces of finished marble.
Description:   The soil color is dark brownish black. The soil compaction is hard. The soil is well sorted. It is silty clay.
Notes:   From 10/4/14-11/4/14, we excavated a clay surface layer in the baulk NW of the Frankish church's narthex and W. of room 5 within unit 2. This surface was beneath the road (TESE 24) and leveling layers (38 and 42) of the EM period and was cut into by the soft fill pit (TESE 46). It is quite hard, which indicates a great deal of traffic over the surface in the past. A few pieces of finished marble were found in the fill as well. Towards the SE end of the baulk the soil was more granular and less silty. Foreman Thanassis thought this perhaps represented debris from a building but did not believe it represented a separate context from the clay surface layer. A large tree root turned up during excavations which may have caused some confusion in the stratigraphy or depositions. Deposits included large quantities of Frankish ceramics. This layer probably represents a traffic throughway in the period before the area was level and covered in the metalled road surface (TESE 24). It appears to go under the EM wall (TESE 11/15), so a martyr was left adjacent to the wall until the rest of the wall can be removed. With the removal of this surface, the baulk can now have the so-called 'sterile' red layer removed, which is of great interest for generally understanding the formation of the site, and which is one of our primary goals in excavation. The eastern half of this trafficway was excavated by Tom Brogan in 1993 (NB 859, p. 27). The part south of the previously excavated eastern half of the lime pit was excavated by Harris and Johnson in 1995 (NB 873 p. 60; it is called a "floor(?)").
Interesting here is the lack of cooking wares of the late 13th/14th century given the other pottery within the context.
