Description:   The soil color is dark brownish black. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is well sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Work began on an unexcavated baulk W. of room 5 of Unit 2, northwest of the narthex of the Frankish church. The intiial stage was surface cleaning, especially focusing on a lime pit on the east side of the baulk. The pit is half-covered by a tree which cannot be removed. Consequently, only 1/3 of the pit can be dug. It extends to ~5cm N. from the edge of the tree, and its extent is visible in the scarp. It should also be noted in addition that the pit's extent is truncated by past excavations into room 5 (NB 864, p. 7, and 873, pp. 48-49).
