Title:   Cut for possible robbing activity of wall 556
Notebook:   1109
Context:   643
Date:   2015/04/30
Description:   The context shape in plan is sub-rectangular. The top break of the cut is sharp. The sides of the cut are vertical. The break at the base of the cut is sharp. The base of the cut is flat. Truncation: appears to have its original shape, but truncated by modern reconstruction trench between the cut and Wall 556.
Notes:   At the time of excavation originally thought to be a foundation trench for Wall 556, cut by the modern reconstruction trench; after excavation, it was realized it was not a foundation trench, but rather a robbing trench for wall 556. It was unclear if the robbing trench excavated in 2014 was undercut or if 643 represented another separate robbing event. The cut was recognzied by the different soil compaction and colors and the different amounts of inclusions. The cut 643 cuts 612 and 614; it also cuts 617 only in the NE portion. The fill of cut 643 (context 608) indicates a mid-13th century date, whereas the contexts cut by 643 are mid-12th century in date. The robbing trench may indicate a robbing/reconstruction of wall 556 tied to a wider reuse of the area in the 13th century.
