Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the SW. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is weakly cemented. The soil is well sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   (KTT) 8:45: We begin work in the N of the Room 3. We have started clearing a compacted surface-the result of earlier conservation work in the area. The upper crust of the context is a hard, compacted white, however, less than a centimeter down, the soil is more moist and has a yellowish brown color. We had initially seen a division between the E and W halves of this context, however, discussion with Panos revealed that this apparent division is the result of watering of the area during earlier conservation work. The soil also becomes more compacted to the NE, again the result of earlier work and wheelbarrows running over this area during the current season. A few more stones also begin to appear in the NE, though the change does not seem to be too significant, we will, however, watch to see if a change in context is warranted.
The soil becomes harder and whiter as we move E, though again, this seems to reflect foot and wheelbarrow traffic in this corner. Panos also tellls us that the cement mixer from the previous conservation was in this corner.
A more stony layer is being revealed in the N, just to the E of the north pit. We will sweep and see if we should change once this layer is revealed elsewhere.
10:00 We continue scraping to reveal the layer(s) beneath. Panos sees a break between this context and one to the S of it. We will trowel the edge a bit to see if it is a true break in the context's extension in the S and open a new context if appropriate.
11:15 We have followed the layer down to what might be the redder layer with bits of carbon found elsewhere in the room. Indeed, the area to the NE preserves rather larger/denser scatterings of carbon, though it is not clear if this should indicate burning in the layer itself.
We will move nex to Context 681 which lies to the S of 677 on its E side, S of the pier.
