Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the S. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is weakly cemented. The soil is well sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   (ERA) 11:35 Opening new context. Soil presents the same characteristics as that of 677. The decision of opening a new one was taken following the advice of the workmen, who did not feel confidant about continuing the context south of the pier. The restoration works that took place in the room altered and somehow packed the surface of the exposed context. The removal of them fixes this problem since the soil beloow the thin tramped layer exposes more exposes more of the context below 677. Ultimately, context 677 should equal context 681 for all analytical purposes.
(KTT) The context continued further west than anticipated; we took another point an the workmen began taking a shallow pass. We will continue to explore the edges of the context to ensure it is all removed.
Some further scraping in the W extension revealed a yellower context beneath it. It now seems that the extension was not a part of 681, but was rather a dry, compacted crust of adifferent context. Though this was only a very shallow scraping (ca. 2 cm.) the pottery from the context and the associated finds should be treated as potentially mixed. Now, however, the different contexts beneath 681 and the extension are clear and we will explore their interface to decide which should be taken first.
We will move to the NW corner and remove some of the whitish crust, while we determine next steps in this area.
