Title:   TERRACOTTA FIGURINE OF OVERWEIGHT FEMALE FIGURE WITH COLORFUL GARMENTS OR TATTOOS

Description:   Mouldmade terracotta figurine of obese or overweight female figure with pendulous breasts and large, rounded belly, possibly grotesque. Left breast rests on top of round (pregnant?) belly. Navel indicated by two depressed concentric rings (or, outer groove, inner depression). Deep incision below belly may indicate top of pubis or delineation of legs. Figurine's breasts and belly heavily decorated by paint or slip - red, black, and white - in a variety of designs. Left breast outlined by red band bordered by black; breast itself painted in white with black swirls. Upper abdomen, including area of navel, painted white with varied black lines. Thick red band below navel, under which is painted white and black. Painted decoration may indicate tatoooed skin or patterned clothing. Figurine hollow. Many fingerprints and finger impressions preserved on interior from smearing clay into mould. According to card, Athenian Agora parallels: Baubo, Kottyto type, see C. Decoration:   Red paint, black paint, and white paint or white slip over all.
Material:   Fine light red to red clay with few white inclusions, micaceous inclusions.
Munsell Color:   10R 6/8 (light red) to 2.5YR 6/8 (red)
Condition:   Fragment. Single frgt., preserving left breast, most of abdomen, top of legs or vulva. White, red, and black paints preserved over all.
Period:   Roman
Chronology:   late Roman? Parallels are late 4th and early 5th c. A.C.
