Title:   TERRACOTTA RELIEF: HORSE AND RIDER

Description:   Terracotta mouldmade solid relief of horse and rider. Horse faces right in spirited pose with left leg straight and right leg pulled back. Horse's head pulled in towards chest, pointed ears turned back towards rider with mane falling over forehead and cascading behind ear along neck, large bulging right eye, flat nose, defined chest musculature, and wide belly. Rider sits astride, upright, with right arm bent at right angle against body, right. Rider wears leggings and cloak draping from shoulders, enveloping right arm, and curving around hips and down leg. Back irregularly flattened. Similar to and possibly from same mould as MF-4037 (Davidson 1952, Corinth 12, cat. 308).
Decoration:   White slip cover piece. Red paint mainly on rider but also on horse's head and leg. Black paint also on horse and rider.
Material:   Fine reddish yellow clay fired light gray at core with frequent small to very large platy rounded white, rare large tabular angular black, and few fine sparkling inclusions
Munsell Color:   Surface between: 5R 6/6 (reddish yellow) and 7.5YR 7/6 (reddish yellow), Core:10R 7/1 (light gray) Paint: 2.5R 6/8 (light red)
Condition:   Fragment. Single piece preserving body of rider, head, part of the forequarters and body of horse. Broken at rider's head, horse's front legs and body. Surface worn and scratched. White slip and patchy paint covers piece.
