Dilute glaze: two lines on reserve between each stripe; wickerwork. Red: line down each stripe.; ; The subject is puzzling. The toothed stripes suggest a mattress and pillow, such as those on the St. Petersburg psykter by Euphronios, 644 = St. 1670 (ARV2 16, 15; Paralip. 509; Addenda 153; Euphronios, cat. no. 33) and Bonn 70 by Euthymides (ARV2 28, 12; Addenda 156). If so, the presence of the pantherskin might indicate a Dionysiac theme, perhaps a symposion. The toothed stripes also resemble Oriental costume, for example, that of the Amazon on Würzburg HA 120 = 507 by the Kleophrades Painter (ARV2 181, 1; Paralip. 340, 1; Addenda 186). Max. dim. 0.035. LIMC IV, 1988, p. 232, no. 337, s.v. Gigantes.; ; A, Hephaistos(?): in the Gigantomachy(?). The fragment preserves the face of a man with a very long beard, to right, with a cloak over his outstretched left arm. Below his beard, flames of the molten metal. Preliminary sketch. Relief contour. Dilute glaze: two lines on cheek. Red: flames.; ; Beazley (ARV2 461, 24) suggested that the subject might be Zeus in the Gigantomachy, presumably because the added red looks like the flames of his thunderbolt. But the two thunderbolts I have been able to find in the work of Makron do not have flames: London, B.M. E 140 (ARV2 459, 3; Paralip. 377, 3; Addenda 243). From the late 6th century on, Hephaistos fights with lumps of molten metal held in his tongs, and these lumps usually have flames. A good example, contemporary with 1424, is Hephaistos in the big Gigantomachy on Berlin 2293 by the Brygos Painter (ARV2 370, 10; Paralip. 365, 10 and 367, 10; Addenda 224). For Zeus holding a flaming thunderbolt, see the representation of him on Cab. Méd. 385 by the Kleophrades Painter (ARV2 186, 50; Addenda 188). Here, the subject is not the Gigantomachy but Psychostasia.; ; Makron (ARV2 461, 24).","","Ca. 490-480 B.C.","","","","Object" "","Agora","","Agora:Object:Agora XXX:1628","Red Figured And White Ground | Cups | Type Uncertain","","Agora XXX, no. 1628","Floor fragment.
