Description: | 66 fragments, making up seven pieces, with a bag of numerous fragments. a) About one-quarter of rim with one loop handle, with square handle-panel and portion of shoulder; lion's hindquarters. b) Shoulder fragment; cavalcade of three mounted horsemen riding to right. c) Shoulder fragment; lion's head, panther facing right. d) and e) Lower wall fragments decorated with rays . f) Half of spout. g) Loose wall fragment. Large black figured louterion of early 6th century. Broad horizontal low rim, plain black glaze on top with a band of purple on outer edge, overhanging inside of vessel. Projecting square handle-panel, attached to the loop handle that rises from sharply curved shoulder, decorated on top with a rosette painted in black and purple. Lower body reserved, decorated with rays, area above black. Front of upper body: confronted felines flanking spout. Red Attic clay, with black glaze; added purple highlights and incision. Parallels for figured scenes: cf. Agora XXIII, pp. 32-3; and D. Callipolitis-Feytmans (1965), "Louteria". J.C. believes that the style is close to the Gorgon Painter; cf.
